Green tea

Tea is a beverage obtained by infusing the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant (also known as Camellia Theifera or Thea Sinensis). Of the different varieties of tea, green tea is characterised by the fact that the leaves from which it is made undergo a thermal process known as ‘stabilisation’ aimed at inhibiting the enzymes present in it that catalyse oxidation reactions. In other types of tea, these reactions are the reason for the beverage’s dark colour.

Function

Like guarana, green tea also contains caffeine, albeit to a much lesser extent. It therefore shares with guarana the same mechanisms of action as caffeine. The main active substance in green tea, however, is not caffeine. Instead, it is the catechins present in it that perform the main function in controlling body composition. Among them, the main one is known as epi-gallo-catechin-gallate (EGCG). Like caffeine, catechins also have a thermogenic effect.

Negative notes

Because of its caffeine content, green tea has the same side effects due to caffeine as those already seen in the section on guarana and pure caffeine, albeit to a lesser extent. Those who take green tea may also experience an increase in appetite. It should therefore be used sparingly in the context of calorie-restricted diets, especially if the calorie cut is relatively large. To reduce this side effect, one may consider combining it with an anorectic product (see section below on weight loss supplements).

Form and dosage

Apart from the classic infusion bags, whose catechin content may be difficult to identify, green tea is also available in tablet form. In this type of product, it is easier to find information on standardisation in catechins (sometimes only the EGCG content is specified). Regarding dosage, research recommends 375mg of catechins 3 times/day.
